Everyone Deserves A Slice Of The Pie

Sasha Pirker’s Everyone Deserves A Slice Of The Pie may only be 16 minutes long but every second of it is jam-packed. Through the course of this playful short, she will take us on a journey through thrown pies of cinematic history, with a sideways look at Anna Pavlova, who gave her name to a meringue cake which we will see creates the perfect explosion. Beneath the icing, this is a tribute to activism and feminism in many forms, whether it’s picking up a camera or a pie to take the initiative.
Along the way there are additional nods to the centenary of 16mm film and portable typewriters – though thankfully none of those are thrown. We learn that the honour of that first pie went to Mabel Normand in 1913, and did she ever start a trend. Pirker’s energetic short shows us a load of pie-lobbing, including in films from Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. Pirker skilfully edits her clips so that one minute we’re reading Buster Keaton’s guide to how to construct the perfect cake, while the next we’re seeing them in action or contemplating who in the modern world might be considered a worthy recipient.
With so much going on the only shame is that at this length the pirouettes in various directions are so brief, giving us a taste for ideas that are begging to be dug into further. A film where the credits prove to be every bit as fascinating as the short itself, since they give chapter and verse on what we’ve just watched. A creative collage of ideas that is sweet but still packs a few surprises.
