Silence is golden

The Artist picks up seven BAFTAs

by Amber Wilkinson

Praise rang out for silent film The Artist last night as it took home seven awards from the BAFTAs.

The French film, which tells the story of a silent movie star who faces becoming obsolete with the arrival of sound, was named best film and saw Michel Hazanavicius pick up the awards for best original screenplay and director. The film beat competition including film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - which was named outstanding British film, The Descendants and The Help.

The Artist star Jean Dujardin picked up the best actor award, while Meryl Streep was named best actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in biopic The Iron Lady. Streep said: "Somebody once said the fate of the well-known is to be misunderstood and the ambition of this film, The Iron Lady, was to look at the life of the Iron Lady from the inside out and to locate something real, maybe hidden, but truthful in the life of someone we've all decided we know everything about already."

Supporting acting awards went to Olivia Spencer, for her role as a maid in American drama The Help and veteran Christopher Plummer for his performance as an elderly gay dad in Beginners.

Paddy Considine's Tyrannosaur picked up the outstanding debut award and Kidulthood star Adam Deacon was named the Orange Rising Star in the only award voted for by the public.
