The King's Speech was the big winner at the British Independent Film Awards. Tom Hooper's film, which stars Colin Firth as the stammer-afflicted George VI, won five trophies, including best British independent film and best actor for firth.
Gareth Edwards picked up the best director gong for his low-budget Monsters - which picked up a further two awards - while Carey Mulligan was named best actress for her role in Never Let Me Go.
Joint Directors Johanna von Fischer & Tessa Collinson said: "It has been a great year for British film and this year's nominations certainly reflected the talent working in the country today. We are thrilled for all our winners and are so pleased to see such a variety of films taking home awards tonight."
Elliot Grove, Founder Raindance Film Festival and BIFA added: "The bumper list of Moët BIFA films this year prove that, in Britain at least, lack of money has done nothing to hamper quality or creativity."
