Golden Globe nominations announced

Up In The Air soars ahead of pack.

Up In The Air soared above the rest of the pack in terms of Golden Globe Award nominations in the announcement earlier today.

Jason Reitman's recession-themed tale is in the running for six awards, including best drama, best screenwriter and best director. Actors George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick are also up for acting awards for their roles in the film about a corporate downsizing executive who faces being grounded.

Musical Nine was second in terms of nominations scored, notching up five, including best musical/comedy and acting nods for Penelope Cruz and Daniel Day-Lewis.

James Cameron's 3D extravaganza Avatar also made a strong showing, with four nominations, including best drama and best director.

Duking it out alongside Avatar and Up In The Air for best drama are Sundance winner Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire, Kathryn Bigelow's Iraq exploration The Hurt Locker and Quentin Tarantino's World War II film Inglourious Basterds.

Elsewhere, Sandra Bullock showed she's firmly back on the radar with two acting nominations for her roles in American football drama The Blind Side and comedy The Proposal.

The Hangover, (500) Days Of Summer, Julie & Julia and It's Complicated will stand up against Nine for best musical or comedy, while Meryl Streep will compete agasinst herself for acting honours, with nominations for both Julie & Julia and It's Complicated.

Matt Damon also pulled a double nomination - for comedy acting in Steven Soderbergh's whistleblower comedy drama The Informant! and his supporting role in South African rugby flick Invictus.

The best actress in a drama section is dominated by Brits, with rising star Carey Mulligan (for coming-of-age tale An Eduation), Emily Blunt (as the queen in The Young Victoria) and veteran Helen Mirren (for her role as the wife of Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station) all in the running alongside Bullock and Gabourney Sidibe, who has got to be considered the front runner after already picking up several roles for her starring part in Precious.

Colin Firth will fly the British flag in the drama acting category, for his role as a college professor coming to terms with the loss of his long-term boyfriend in A Single Man. He'll face off against Clooney, Jeff Bridges (for his turn as a heavy-drinking country singer in Crazy Heart), Morgan Freeman (for the role of Nelson Mandela in Invictus) and Tobey Maguire (for his portrayal of a PoW in Brothers).

Fighting it out for the comedy/musical female acting gongs alongside Streep's double showing and Bullock are Marion Cotillard (Nine) and Julia Roberts (Duplicity). Day-Lewis and Damon, meanwhile, face competition Robert Downey Jr (Sherlock Holmes) and first-time nominees Joseph Gordon-Levitt (for quirky rom-com (500) Days Of Summer) and Michael Stuhlbarg (who plays the lynchpin of Coen Brother's comedy A Serious Man).
