The awards season has kicked of with a vengeance with the announcement of this year's Golden Globe nominations.

Among the British contenders for the awards - to be presented on January 13 - are Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, who have been nominated for best actress and actor for their roles in Atonement.

Veteran British star Julie Christie is also in the running for bests actress for her role in Away From Her, while Helena Bonham Carter receives a nomination for her role in Sweeney Todd. Other British actors to receive nods, include Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson

British directors are making their mark in the contest for best picture, with Ridley Scott's American Gangster vieing against Joe Wright's Atonement. They are in a hotly contested field which also includes the Coens' No Country For Old Men, David Cronenburg's Eastern Promises and Tony Gilroy's Michael Clayton.
