The Newt Congress and Backflip
Backflip (Country: Germany; Year: 2022; Director: Nikita Diakur)
Attempting a backflip is not safe. You can break your neck, or land on your head, or land badly on your wrists. None of that is nice, so my avatar does the trick. It practices on a 6-core processor with the help of Machine Learning. The processor is not the newest but still calculates 6 jumps per iteration.
The Earth Will Swallow It All (Country: Poland; Year: 2022; Director: Dominik Ritszel)
As Poland entered a new capitalist economy in the 1990s, waves of mine closures wrought havoc on communities in Upper Silesia. Now a town is literally sinking beneath the weight of its own destruction.
Hardly Working (Country: Austria; Year: 2022; Director: Leonhard Müllner, Susanna Flock, Michael Stumpf, Robin Klengel)
This film sheds a limelight on the very characters that normally remain in the background of video games: NPCs. They are non-player characters that populate the digital world as extras to create the appearance of normality. A laundress, a stable boy, a street sweeper and a carpenter are observed with ethnographic precision.
The Newt Congress (Country: Switzerland, Germany; Year: 2022; Director: Immanuel Esser, Matthias Sahli)
For years now, giant talking newts have been used both for their labour and as laboratory animals. The Newt Congress takes place at a conference building surrounded by nature where participants have come together to optimise the exploitation of these animals.
Nightwalker (Country: Brazil; Year: 2022; Director: Leonardo da Rosa, Gianluca Cozza)
Men risk their lives breaking into moving freight trains to recover leftover grain and sell it on. They undergo nights of endless work in which bodies disappear, swallowed up by the striking industrial landscapes of the Rio Grande port and ensnared by the Brazilian economic crisis.
