Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt |
Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead. The 46 year old actor, who won an Oscar for his performance in Capote, was discovered today in the bathroom of his Manhattan apartment. Law enforcement officials say they suspect a drug overdose but that their investigations are ongoing.
Widely celebrated for his character acting, Hoffman has appeared in a wide range of highly acclaimed films, including Doubt, The Master, Mission: Impossible III, The Talented Mr Ripley and Synecdoche, New York. He was also admired for his work as a theatre director.
"Actors are responsible to the people we play. I don't label or judge. I just play them as honestly and expressively and creatively as I can, in the hope that people who ordinarily turn their heads in disgust instead think, 'What I thought I'd feel about that guy, I don't totally feel right now'," he said when asked to describe his approach to his craft.
Hoffman had problems with heroin in his early twenties and suffered a relapse last year, but made the decision to seek treatment himself and was thought to be a good candidate for recovery.
He is survived by his long term partner, Mimi and their three children, Cooper, Tallulah and Willa.
