Shetlanders welcome ScreenPlay festival

4th annual event brings independent film to the islands.

by Jennie Kermode

The chances are that you read about a lot of interesting films, here on Eye For Film, that you never get the chance to see. Accessing independent film can be difficult even if you live in a big city. It's even harder in rural locations. That's why the ScreenPlay festival is so important, bringing stimulating, original films to one of the most remote corners of the British Isles.

Curated by Linda Ruth Williams and Mark Kermode, Screenplay runs from 2 to 5 September and features a wide variety of films from popular hits like Chicago and Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets to lost classics like Lambert Hillyer's silent western White Oak. Documentaries include the heartwarming Sounds Like Teen Spirit. There's a short film strand celebrating the best local work and another focusing on work with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themes, imaginatively titled Stick 'Em On An Island. The festival also brings some notable special guests to Shetland, including directors Julien Temple and Ken Wardrop and star Jason Isaacs.
