Exposure

Just like Avatar which is also showing in July's Shoot First, the word Exposure bears more than one definition here. What begins as a nurse being exposed to spooky goings on while working the night shift, broadens into an exposure of the way social standings affect life and death. Director Beaton also bashes down the third wall to expose his crew.

There is plenty of interesting technique on display here, including a nice dream sequence of a woman walking on a beach. However, it feels oddly disjointed and has a slightly strange, pop video feel.

Ultimately, it exposes us to too many ideas within such a short runtime. It would be interesting to see Beaton either pare down his work to more simplistic ideas which could be investigated more deeply or get the opportunity to direct a lengthier short.
