The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the lists of short films advancing to the next stage of Oscar contention. This is the final stage before the nominations themselves are announced on 23 January.

"It is a huge privilege to be shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards," said Elham Ehsas, director of Yellow. "I hope this is one step closer to giving a voice to all the girls and women in Afghanistan who have had no access to an education for the past two years and counting. This film is for them. They will not be forgotten."

"My perception of the world is being reshaped with this surreal experience," said An Avocado Pit's Ary Zara. "What I considered impossible is now a tangible achievement, one I never dared to dream of. I embrace the disbelief and profound gratitude that accompany this remarkable milestone. The purpose of this film has always been to reach the largest number of people with a story free from violence surrounding the transgender theme. I believe we succeeded."

"Thank you so much to the Academy and to everyone who put us on the shortlist. We tried to tell a characterful and human story that we knew would resonate deeply for the unseen and unheard voices that could not tell their story for themselves. Thank you for making us all feel seen and heard. We are truly honoured and humbled and I may need to take some time to cry some tears of joy as I process this,” said Nazrin Choudhury, director of Red, White And Blue.
