Big Lebowski star Jeff Bridges has been diagnosed with lymphoma, it emerged last night. The actor made an announcement on Twitter to explain that he is now starting treatment for the disease, which affects around a million people in the US at any one time. "Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good," he wrote.

Lymphoma is a form of cancer which affects white blood cells, leading them to build up in the body and cause painful swelling. It can make the immune system function less effectively, but there are many different variants, some much more dangerous than others. Most cases of lymphoma respond well to treatment.

Reflecting on his illness, Bridges expressed his gratitude for the love and support of his family and friends. He also used the opportunity to encourage his fellow citizens to vote in the upcoming US election.
