For the first time, a superhero film has won acclaim at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, taking the coveted prize for Outstanding Cast as well as the one for Best Stunt ensemble. Ryan Coogler's Black Panther made a big impression on the voters, all of whom are actors themselves, and is likely to change the way that other awards bodies perceive such films. Outstanding Cast is considered by many actors to be the most important award they can win, not just because it reflects the admiration of their peers but because it celebrates how well they can work within a team, often a bigger factor when it comes to casting than a Best Actor Prize.

This year, that prize went to Rami Malek for his widely praised work in Golden Globe winning biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, portraying Queen singer Freddie Mercury. Best Actress was won by Glenn Close, who has received a nomination from virtually every awards body for her performance in The Wife. Mahershala Ali, who has received similar attention, won Best Supporting actor for the controversial Green Book and Emily Blunt proved a successful outsider, taking Best Supporting Actress for A Quiet Place.
