She gave us one of the defining film characters of the Eighties and paved the way for a revolution in how women were portrayed in action films. Now, 25 years after Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Linda Hamilton is to return as Sarah Connor.

Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron (who will now act as producer) will reunite for Terminator 6, a direct sequel to Judgement Day. Deadpool director Tim Miller will take the helm and the story will centre on new characters, but Cameron has stressed that Hamilton will be a physically active character, saying that if men in their fifties and sixties are still fighting bad guys in today's films then women should be too.

The film echoes the approach taken by Star Wars: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens, in which Carrie Fisher's Leia, though she doesn't get any action scenes, has become a military general and remains a driving force in the story despite her age.
