by Jennie Kermode

American Hustle, 12 Years A Slave and Dallas Buyers Club all picked up gongs at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards last night, but it was perhaps the latter that had the most to celebrate, having achieved remarkable success on a budget of just $4m. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, both of whom lost considerable amounts of weight for their roles as people living with AIDS, were thrilled to e acclaimed by their peers in what is often considered the most important set of awards for actors. Leto is now favourite to win at the Oscars in March.

Also among the winners was Lupita Nyong'o, who thanked 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen "for taking a flashlight and shining it underneath the floorboards of this nation and reminding us what it is we stand on." Overwhelmed to receive an award, she said that when she had told her father she was going to be in a film with Brad Pitt her responded "I don't know him personally but I'm glad you got a job."
