Kodak files for bankruptcy

Digital killed the film camera star.

by Jennie Kermode

"You push the button, we do the rest." That was the slogan that launched Kodak into a business success story that has dominated the past fifty years. But now the iconic company is set to close its shutters permanently, with film studios like Disney and Warner Bros. calling time on unpaid bills.

Far more than just a camera company, Kodak specialised in producing film which, at least in the early days, was hard to beat for quality. But recently it has suffered due to the increasing popularity of digital photography and filmimg, with filmmakers increasingly adopting the new way of working. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Manhattan today. Its demise will be seen as a historic sign of the shift to digital dominance within the film and photography industries.
