Bollywood stars wow Toronto

Band Baaja Baarat scoops big prizes at the IIFAs.

by Jennie Kermode

This year's IIFA awards are being held in Toronto as part of the International Indian Film Academy's campaign to reach out to new markets and bring its wares to new audiences. They have been warmly received with crowds of fans mobbing hotels and the Coliseum, and have been credited with bringing back a level of glamour that Hollywood rarely achieves these days.

Stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Anupam Kher addressed the crowds as romantic comedy Band Baaja Baarat and thriller Dabangg took three major awards each. Indian-US collaboration My Name Is Khan scored well in the technical categories and the ceremony also featured a special tribute to Michael Jackson led by his brother Jerome. As usual, song and dance formed an important part of the event, which has previously been held in London, Bangkok and Johannesburg. There was also a fashion show featuring the work of leading Indian designers whose work has featured in the films in competition.
