Read David Graham's film review of Villain

A lengthy interview with likeable-in-person lead Tsumabuki is all the more charming for taking place in the informal setting of a restaurant, the star and his questioner sharing a hot-pot as they discuss aspects of the complicated production and the young actor's daring approach to tackling such serious and unconventional subject matter. The conversation does become somewhat repetitive however, in spite of some jaunty editing and the natural rapport between its participants.

There is also an hour-long making-of that will truly test the patience of the casual viewer, although it does shed light on the expectation that this adaptation carried and the appreciation the filmmakers had for the source material. Insight is given into how the film relates to Japanese concerns, but much of the detail seems superfluous for Western viewers.

A trailer rounds out the package, emphasising the story's questioning of who the real villain might be. It amusingly adopts up a sort of whodunit style that doesn't reflect the film's actual content, but it still makes the feature look more meaningful and interesting than it will probably turn out to be for most viewers.
