Read Amber Wilkinson's film review of The Princess Of MontpensierThere may be only one extra on this StudioCanal disc - but it's a cracker.
The hour-long making of documentary is, not unlike the film itself, a breath of fresh air compared to many of its ilk. It takes you to the heart of the making of the film, showing Tavernier at work with the actors on the set and giving you a real feel for his filmmaking and personal style.
The contributors are also refreshingly honest, open about Tavernier's "workaholic" tendencies and happy to talk about the fact he is a hard task master at the same time as praising his attention to detail. By immersing us in the machinations of the set, we are able to see his charisma at work and also to gain an appreciation of some of the difficulties presented by the battle scenes and period settings. For Tavernier fans or anyone interested in the filmmaking process, this disc is worth acquiring for this extra alone, even if you have no interest in his latest film.
