The Muppet Show: Series One

Read Amber Wilkinson's film review of The Muppet Show: Series OneThis is a very nicely put together DVD. Instead of boring children - and possibly adults - with commentary tracks, they've opted for a feature called Muppet Morsels, instead. When you turn them on, subtitled information about the puppeteers, the guest stars and the show in general flashes up at regular intervals throughout each 30-minute slot. They're by turns fascinating and a bit dull, but with the emphasis firmly on the former.
They help you identify the American actors you don't recognise and provide an insight into how the puppeteers developed each Muppet character. Some of the morsels are a little odd and possibly aimed at children - definitions of words such as "scalpel", for example - but overall they add a lot to the shows. My one gripe would be that each is accompanied by an animated graphic that obscures the middle of the screen, though I suspect this is to keep the little ones amused, while mum and dad read up on a blast from their youth.
Also included are the promotional gag reels used to trail each show, the original pitch reel which Jim Henson created for studio executives (hilarious) and the original pilot, Sex And Violence - yes, you read that right! The prototype is missing the essential ingredient of Kermit, but still provides plenty of laughs and it's interesting to see how the first season of the show grew out of this.
Sound and picture quality is much what you'd expect from a TV show in the Seventies - you're not buying this for its good looks and perfect singing voice, so I shouldn't worry.
