The Hitman

No major issues with the quality of the restored anamorphic transfer on this Region 2 DVD from Hong Kong Legends. There are a couple of moments where the print shows signs of damage - some scratches, a line down the screen - but nothing to seriously hamper one's enjoyment.

Sound is fine, with the choice of English dub and Cantonese soundtracks, the latter being the preferable option.

The extras are slightly unusual.

First up is a promo documentary about Hong Kong Legends. While there's an element of self-congratulation to this featurette, HKL's pride in their work is clearly justified when one sees the work that goes into a release, from restoration of damaged prints, through to re-subtitling and dubbing into more idiomatic, less unintentionally humorous language, to the design of the menus and title screens.

Next are the HKL trailers for a slew of other releases on the label, from Zu Warriors From The Magic Mountain to The Killer to Game of Death.

As a full price DVD, it would be difficult to recommend this over other equally good films in the same range with better extras. But, as a budget priced introduction to Hong Kong action cinema, it will be hard to beat.
