Eye For Film >> Movies >> Starsky And Hutch (2004) DVD Review
The commentary is advertised as featuring Todd Phillips, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. It says something about the quality of disc production when the extra features start lying to you. Stiller and Wilson are not present at any point during this audio commentary, leaving you with a bland, occasionally interesting director-only track.
This feature contrasts badly with the others as it is the only one that does not try to be funny. The sound of the film is too loud and it is difficult to hear Phillips over the dialogue at times. It has very little going for it, but if you want an insight into the making of the film, then this is the only extra that offers some.
The Fashion Fa Shizzle with Huggy Bizzle is a (thankfully) two minute long extra, which features Snoop Dogg parading the different outfits he wore as Huggy Bear - neither interesting, nor amusing. If they wanted to do a feature on costume design they should have moved it in to the mockumentary and had Snoop Dogg complaining about the ridiculous costumes he had to wear, which would have fitted in nicely with the style of the next extra.
Last Special Spoof is a regular Making Of, except that instead of being nice about each other the actors relay their awful on-set experiences. Each one has something different to say, while director Phillips talks about how many friends he's made. A nice change from the norm, but not useful information and will only make you smile rather than laugh.
The Deleted Scenes keep in the spirit of the film with some nice added moments between Starsky and Hutch. No director's commentary, or introduction, accompanies, but since nearly every director says, "Because it ruined the pace," what's the point, anyway?
The Gag Reel is not hysterically funny, but serves to entertain. It's been thrown onto the disc because it seems it didn't have the humour to feature in the end credits, as with other movies.
Vince's Bit For The Kids can be accessed by pressing "left" on your remote when the cursor is next to the Gag Reel feature. This is a short, funny and utterly pointless extra, which has classic easter egg quality. Maybe the best bit of the disc.
