Read Keith Hennessey Brown's film review of Samaritan GirlPreviously available only via grey market and bootleg sources as Samaria, this DVD from Tartan marks the first official release of the film in the UK, in Region 2 PAL format. Image quality is, however, only so-so, with the widescreen transfer marred by a slight but nonetheless noticeable band approximately one-third from the left hand edge of the screen and one-tenth its width throughout the film, that darkens this strip of the image a touch, coupled by a distinct lack of sharpness to some scenes.
The subtitles are clear throughout and marred by only minor misspellings, while the audio, with the promise of 5.1 DTS and 5.1 surround in addition to the standard 2.0 stereo at least attempts some compensation for the visuals.
While the preview disc only features trailers for the film and other Korean releases from Tartan, including Ki-Duk's Bad Guy and Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring, the packaging indicates that the retail version will also include an introduction and interview with the director.
