Writer/director Glenn Standring’s second feature (following his success with The Irrefutable Truth About Demons) gamely does its best to reinvent the vampire film with its central concept and some moody genre-slicing. No such innovation for its R2 dvd release, which goes for a solid and safe Making Of and nothing else.

That said, there’s no –ette about this feature, clocking in at more than one and a quarter hours. All the principle cast and crew crop up frequently and are not plagued by too much mutual backslapping. It’s thorough stuff and much is made of Standring’s and the film’s New Zealand origins, with interesting focus on the joint UK-New Zealand funding and production partnerships.

The film itself has a similarly solid transfer. The almost continuous 5.1 soundtrack is used effectively during the action sequences and more atmospheric scenes. The visual presentation is clean throughout and the all-important darks remain constant (especially essential in a vampire flick) even if the crispness of the picture highlights some of the CGI failings.

For partially sated genre fans only.
