Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster

Aside from the commentaries, which were not on my review copy, the joy of these extras is the very extensive deleted scenes - 28 in all. Some are fairly redundant, with more general milling around in the studio not adding much to the story of Metallica's tortuous year, but there are some good ones.

There is more of their therapist's hilarious mixture of manipulation and banality, a much longer version of the row over James' insistence that they work 12-4pm only and some more splendid tantrums from Lars - particularly as he yells, "All this psychobabble horseshit! Twenty years of hatred sold 100 million records!"

There's a nice insight into his childhood, as he and new bassist Robert Trujillo visit his first home in Copenhagen, where he was raised as the cosseted son of a tennis star. And it's nice to see producer (and James Hunt lookalike) Bob Rock so delighted to make his stage debut with the band that he can't stop grinning, even as they sing about Satan.

The self-reflective nature of the whole enterprise reaches its climax as we see the band watching the film, the filmmakers showing it to a test audience and discussing what happened when the band watched the film, footage of the film being shown and discussed at film festivals ... and so on. There can be little about the whole process of making the documentary that isn't recorded.

Overall, this may be more Metallica than anyone, other than fervent fans, need, but it's certainly a value-for-money addition to a hilarious film.
