Eye For Film >> Movies >> Howard The Duck (1986) DVD Review
Filmed in standard widescreen, the 1.85:1 anamorphic picture is pretty damn good with hardly a complaint to be had. I really don’t understand why this film wasn’t shot in Panavision, but perhaps an aspect ratio more fitting to a comic-book panelling was the intention. I have no complaints regarding the picture quality.
Originally recorded in 70mm six-track stereo, there is probably enough life in the original elements to create an effect Dolby 5.1 mix for Howard the Duck, but all we get is simple 2.0 surround. It works just fine, however, if a little dated.
The only extra is a trailer. Metrodome could have used the vast behind the scenes footage and interviews that are available but they didn’t even bother. I don’t even know why Metrodome is releasing the DVD since it is a Universal Studios film, but perhaps they just want to wash their hands of Howard forever. Pity, he doesn’t deserve it.
