Eye For Film >> Movies >> Cure (1997) DVD Review
Long considered one of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's greatest works, Cure finally arrives on dual format DVD/Blu-ray with English subtitles. It's accompanied by a historic interview with the director in which he reflects on the early years of his career, moving from soft porn 'pink films' through straight-to-VHS dramas and finding himself acclaimed for the artistry of his work almost by accident. His philosophical approach and exploration of ideas is fascinating and will have a strong appeal for admirers of his films.
There's also a contemporary interview with Kurosawa in which he focuses directly on Cure, what inspired him to make it, what he was trying to achieve visually and how it fits into that period of his career. The interview with Kim Newman included alongside it offers a distinctly more lightweight introduction to the material, and also present is the trailer, which is beautifully edited and as disturbing as the film itself. A beautifully illustrated collector's booklet completes the package.
