Cannes Film Festival’s supremo Thierry Frémaux has reiterated the strict Covid regulations after lapses in the protocols about wearing masks on the red carpet and in the main screening rooms in the Palais des Festivals.

There had been complaints about stars making the traditional kisses and hugs on the red carpet, and of masks being lowered during the screenings.

“I remind the audience that masks are the rule of the day by law, and they guarantee that the festival will reach its end safely, “ said Frémaux, who himself had been spotted as being less than scrupulous.

Photos and videos were posted on social media showing audiences without masks while some onlookers noted that stars including Jessica Chastain and Carla Bruni were seen kissing and embracing against the social distancing rules.

Festival goers have to provide a Covid pass showing they have been doubled vaccinated or they have to undergo tests every 48 hours to be admitted to the main screening room.

The number of Covid cases in France is showing a steady decrease but there has been a rise in infections with the advent of the Delta variant which is more contagious and therefore requires greater vigilance. The French Government is meeting on Monday to discuss any new sanitary measures.
