A spectacle of debonair allure ... Marcello Mastroianni, poster icon for Cannes 2014
With only 29 days to go before the start of the Cannes Film Festival 2014 the organisers today unveiled an iconic image of Marcello Mastroianni which will feature as the poster for the 67th edition.

It is based on a photogram taken from Federico Fellini’s 8½ which was presented in the Festival’s official selection in 1963.

The poster’s designer Gilles Frappier, as might be expected, waxed lyrical about the results of his endeavours: “The way he looks at us above his black glasses draws us right in to a promise of global cinematographic happiness. The happiness of experiencing the Festival de Cannes together.”

Meanwhile Mastroianni’s daughter Chiara was equally ebullient: “I am very proud and touched that Cannes has chosen to pay tribute to my father with this poster. I find it very beautiful and modern, with a sweet irony and a classy sense of detachment. It’s really him through and through!”

Just what delights the organisers have in store will be revealed on Thursday (May 17) at the Festival’s official media unveiling in Paris.

Also announced is the personality who will host the opening ceremony – he is French actor Lambert Wilson, a frequent Cannes attendee and collaborator with the late Alain Resnais as well as the star of art house hit Of Gods and Men and Hollywood blockbuster the Matrix Reloaded.

The Festival runs from May 14 to 25. We'll be bringing you reports throughout.
